How to choosing the right vlf tester for your application?

Not all VLF hipot testers deliver the same results. When evaluating equipment, the practical checklist looks something like this:

- **Output voltage range** — must cover 1.7–3× the cable's phase-to-ground rated voltage per IEEE 400.2
- **Multi-frequency support** — 0.1 Hz down to 0.01 Hz ensures you're not limited by cable length on-site
- **Load capacitance rating at each frequency** — this is the real determinant of what you can actually test
- **Voltage waveform distortion** — ≤5% total harmonic distortion keeps measurements valid for standards-compliant withstand tests
- **Automation level** — fully automated test sequences reduce operator error and improve repeatability

- **Power supply flexibility** — 220 V grid or generator compatibility is essential for remote field work

For **medium voltage cable acceptance testing** after installation, a compact automated unit covers most contractor and utility requirements. For longer infrastructure runs or aging cable rehabilitation programs, the combination of multi-frequency output and extended capacitance ratings delivers the reach that a fixed 0.1 Hz tester simply can't match.

Whatever the job — commissioning a new substation feeder, verifying a splice repair, or working through a scheduled **underground cable insulation test** program — the underlying goal is the same: confirm what's buried is fit for service, before the grid depends on it.
