Significance of Determination of Freezing Point and Pour Point of Petroleum Products:
The freezing point is the maximum temperature at which the flow of petroleum products stops under specified cooling conditions. The solidification of oils is very different from that of pure compounds. Oils do not have a definite freezing temperature. The so-called "solidification" means that the oil as a whole loses its fluidity, and not all components become solid.
The freezing point of lubricating oil is a very important information quality management index that expresses lubricity and low temperature fluidity. It has important research significance for the production, transportation and use methods of enterprises. Lubricating oils with a high freezing point cannot be used at low temperatures. In the same way, development in areas with higher temperatures does not provide the necessary use of low freezing point lubricants. Because the lower the freezing point of lubricating oil, the higher and higher production and operation costs, resulting in some unnecessary waste. Generally speaking, the freezing point of lubricating oil should be 5-7 degrees Celsius lower than the ambient low temperature used in normal work. However, the special design needs to be constantly reminded that when selecting low-temperature lubricating oil, the freezing point, low-temperature viscosity and viscosity-temperature characteristics of the oil should be considered comprehensively. Because of the low freezing point oil, its low temperature viscosity and viscosity temperature characteristics may not meet the actual technical requirements.
Both set point and dump point are indicators of the low temperature fluidity of petroleum products. There is no difference in principle between the two, but the measurement method is slightly different. The set point and critical point of the same oil are not exactly equal, and the critical point is generally 2-3 degrees higher than the set point. But there are exceptions.
